U-Roy was born Ewart Beckford, 1942, in Kingston, Jamaica. U-Roy started as a sound system DJ in 1961, spinning records for Doctor Dickies, later known as Dickes Dynamic. Around 1967, U-Roy started to DJ for King Tubby's Home Town Hi-Fi. With that, the whole modern DJ style started to develop. Tubby, working as a disc-cutter at Duke Reid's studio, then discovered dub. U-Roy is the one most responsible for putting the DJ on the map, both as recording artists in Jamaica, and as a major influence on US rappers.
